WHAT’S INCLUDED: COLT MODEL 1878 FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER REVOLVER
The Colt Model 1878 Frontier Six Shooter represents Colt's answer to the growing demand for a powerful double-action revolver during the American frontier era. Chambered in the highly desirable .44-40 Winchester cartridge and fitted with the classic 7.50-inch barrel, this example embodies the same cartridge compatibility that made Colt and Winchester combinations legendary throughout the West. Its serial number places it firmly within the antique production period, making it a genuine piece of nineteenth-century firearms history.

Unlike the Single Action Army, the Model 1878 offered both double-action and single-action operation, allowing significantly faster follow-up shots while retaining the precision of a manually cocked hammer. The substantial frame and long barrel provide excellent balance, while the fixed sights deliver the straightforward durability expected from a working frontier revolver. These large-frame Colts earned a reputation for rugged service on ranches, stage lines, and throughout the expanding American frontier.

This revolver retains attractive checkered hard rubber Rampant Colt eagle grips that appear period-correct for the model. The bird's-head grip frame and factory lanyard ring are particularly desirable collector features and give the revolver a distinctive profile compared to many contemporary designs. Visible wear, thinning finish, and honest handling marks are consistent with a revolver that has seen more than a century of existence while preserving its original character.

The .44-40 Winchester cartridge was among the most important sporting and frontier cartridges of the nineteenth century. Owners could carry a revolver and lever-action rifle chambered for the same ammunition, simplifying logistics and making the cartridge enormously popular throughout the American West. That practical advantage helped establish the Frontier Six Shooter as one of Colt's most recognizable and collectible chamberings.
Collector interest in the Model 1878 continues to grow because production numbers were far lower than those of the Single Action Army. Examples marked "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" are especially sought after due to their direct connection to the iconic .44-40 chambering. Combined with its antique status, desirable barrel length, lanyard ring, and strong frontier association, this revolver offers the kind of historical presence that advanced Colt collectors actively pursue.
