Antique Colt 1878 44-40 7 1/2" Barrel. Complete Etched Panel. Excellent Bore and Mechanics. Lots Of Original Nickel Finish With It's Original Holster
Description:
SOLD...Antique Colt 1878 Double Action Etched Panel 44-40... Here is an excellent Colt Model 1878. Factory letter confirms this Colt is all original. S/N 19878 .44 caliber, 7 1/2” barrel, Nickel Finish, Stocks Not Listed, Shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett, & Company, Chicago, Illinois, September 9th, 1887. Also comes with it's original double loop holster that is marked Montgomery Wards Co., Chicago, Illinois. The gun fits the holster like a glove and is form fit and both were from Chicago ,Illinois .. What a perfect match !!!! Could this gun and holster been together since 1887 ?? This very nice 1878 has quite a bit of original finish. The barrel has about 50% to 60% nickel. The etched panel is 100% readable and is original, just the way you love to find these etched panels. Small 44 stamped on the bottom of the barrel. Perfect barrel address also. The ejector housing has about 60% nickel. The cylinder has about 50% nickel and is marked on the rear with 878 matching.. The frame including the front and rear grip straps has about 85% nickel and the trigger guard has about 90% nickel with the small 44 also stamped on the left front bow. The back of the hammer retains 80% fire blue. The rear of the trigger has about 90% fire blue. All the screws are in excellent condition with no tool marks and retain anywhere from 100% to 40% fire blue. Original cylinder pin. The mechanics are excellent as well.. A little play with the hammer down but locks up crisp and tight like a new gun in the single action and double action with NO cylinder side roll in the firing position with the trigger pulled to the rear in this odd way that these 1878's lock up. There are no locking notched on these 1878's and they lock up with the forward pressure from the hand that rotates the cylinder when the trigger is pulled.. Why Colt designed these this way is very odd to me. No front to rear cylinder movement and no side to side wobble on the cylinder pin bushing or cylinder pin....The safety, half cock and full cock notches on the hammer are perfect and positive with no wear. The bore is excellent, bright and shiny with no pitting. The rifling is strong as new. Best bore I have seen in quite some time on any antique Colt revolver.. The chambers are like new also. The grips are excellent with no cracks or chips and retain all of there fine checkering showing very little to no wear. A perfect factory snap on fit. The holster is in near excellent condition.. All the stitching is intact and tight. Sewn in muzzle plug still intact. NO rips or tears and NO crazing but for a very few small areas as you can see and at the trigger guard. The number 45 is stamped on the top loop and the catalog number 114 is stamped on the bottom loop. The holster of course will fit a Colt Single Action with a 7 1/2” barrel as well but a little too much room in the trigger guard area. As I mentioned, the gun fits this holster like a glove. This is one of Montgomery Wards better holsters using much thicker and better leather than they usually would use from what I have seen over the years of dealing and collecting old gun leather. All in all, this is a very nice and 100% honest set including the Colt Factory Letter. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos. $35 insured shipping.
