AUSTIN TEXAS SHIPPED Antique COLT 38-40 WCF Single Action Army REVOLVER SAA LETTERED NICKEL .38-40 WCF Colt 6-Shooter Made in 1891!
Description: AUSTIN TEXAS SHIPPED Antique COLT 38-40 WCF Single Action Army REVOLVER SAA LETTERED NICKEL .38-40 WCF Colt 6-Shooter Made in 1891! Here we present an antique Colt Single Action Army Revolver, manufactured in 1891 in Hartford, Connecticut. The factory letter confirms that the revolver was equipped with a 4-3/4 inch barrel in .38-40 caliber with a scarce factory nickel finish when it was shipped to J.C. Petmecky in Austin, Texas on August 1, 1891. Joseph Carl Petmecky (1842-1929) was an German (or Austro-Hungarian, depending on the source) immigrant who came from Europe with his family at a young age with the Prince of Solm party to Indianola, Texas. The family settled around Seguin/New Braunfels, Texas (circa 1845). His mother passed away young, and his father remarried and he was apprenticed to a Austin gunsmith by the name of Owens (circa 1851). Owens died in 1855 and Joseph took over the business. Petmecky was a skilled metal worker and did not only produce firearms but high-quality spurs, many of them gal-legs. Petmecky is credited with inventing the “O.K.” style spur that he sold to Buermann, who eventually made them famous by mass producing them and providing them more affordably to cowboys across the west. During the American Civil War, Joseph closed his shop temporarily and joined the Sibley Expedition that captured Albuquerque, New Mexico. However, they were driven out by Union forces at the Battle of Glorietta. One source says that Joseph joined a local vigilante group in the Austin area following his return in 1862, but another says that he joined the Texas 33rd Regiment Cavalry (Duff’s Partisan Rangers) Company C as a private. Regardless, he survived the war and went back to his gun shop at 507 Congress Avenue. He was a very successful businessman, married and had 6 sons and a daughter. It is said that during his career he made guns for the likes of Sam Houston (1793-1863) as well as Texas Rangers and Indian fighters such as Big Foot Wallace (1817-1899), Ben McCullough (1811-1862), and Lawrence “Sul” Sullivan Ross (1838-1898). He passed in 1929, though his family kept the business going after his death. The overall condition is very good+. Original nickel finish/patina. The numbers match. The action is excellent. The bore is in good shape with strong rifling and a gray patina. The rampant colt trademarked hard rubber grips show wear and remain solid. A very nice, factory nickel finished Colt SAA sent to Austin, Texas in 1891! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 4-3/4 inches. Caliber: .38-40 Winchester Center Fire (WCF) Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $9435 #215505 SOLD Antique: Yes |
