** SOLD ** Colt 1st Model "U.S."
Dragoon, Serial #6460, Cal. .44 Percussion, 1848 Vintage
Description: With a total production of approximately 7,000, 1st Model Dragoons were a great improvement over the previous Walker Models and found immediate demand from the U.S. Government and civilian purchasers due to their strength and reliability, the most significant being the shortening of the cylinder which prevented the over-loading of the powder charge. Compared to the previous standard issue, single shot sidearms that had been in service for over a hundred years, these rapid fire, six shot models revolutionized battlefield tactics, first with the marauding indians in the southwest, and shortly thereafter with the U.S. Cavalry engaged in the Civil War. They were the harbinger of all modern revolvers. Approximately 3,000 1st Models were purchased by the U.S. Government, and like this example, were stamped "U.S." on the frame under the Colt Patent, and with the inspector's cartouche on both sides of the grip handles. Most saw hard use, and to find one in good working condition with all matching serial numbers and some cylinder scene is rare. This gun, which is all numbers matching (serial # 6460), was manufactured in 1848, and has survived in good, above average condition. It is tight, has all orignal parts, and has been well used but not abused. The action functions smoothly, the bore is fair, the nipples are good, and it could still function as well as it did 175 years ago. It is an attractive and excellent surviving example of this histroic Colt revolover. While all Dragoons are collectible, 1st Models purchased by the government are the most desirable. NOTE: It is fitted with a 7 1/2 inch barrel and weighs 4.2 pounds. ANTIQUE FIREARM PRICE: $6,500 We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, a dealer of fine firearms since 1974.
