COLT CAVALRY MODEL 1873 U.S. CAVALRY REVOLVER W/KOPEC & ARCHIVE
LETTERS
Description: Colt SAA U.S. Cavalry model 1873 revolver. Comes with John A. Kopec and Colt Archive letters, also other historical info. The accompanying factory letter states this Cavalry Model SAA was delivered to the U.S. Government inspector located at the Colt factory on March 18, 1891. The accompanying John Kopec letter states that “all of the serial numbers from #137970 thru #139503 are listed [in the National Archives] were in the Artillery configuration. The only Cavalry Model #137940 located, is listed as originally belonging to Troop K 8th Cavalry. There are simply not enough Cavalry revolvers within this serial number range to draw any conclusions about this revolver’s original area of service.” In Kopec’s opinion the revolver was an original Cavalry Model but with replacement base pin screw, trigger screw and base pin. About two years after the Kopec letter was penned, Gary Paul Johnston published the article “One Troopers Guns” in the Nov./Dec. 1999 issue of the American Rifleman. The article identified Cavalry Model 138538, which is only 233 numbers away from this Colt, as being issued to Rasmus Bolinson Rasmassen of the 6th Cavalry. Johnston also published the information in the article “Cavalry Colt: The Amazing Journey of a 6th U.S. Cavalry Trooper” that appeared in the Nov./Dec 2003 issue of the American Handgunner ( copy included). The articles describe the long and colorful life of a trooper who walked off Fort Riley carrying his Colt. A similar story could be waiting to be discovered behind this SAA, which would explain how this Cavalry Model survived in original configuration while virtually all others in the serial number range 137970-139503 were converted to Artillery Models. The revolver has the one-line Hartford barrel address, two-line patent date marking followed by "US" on the left side of the frame, "P" proofs on the cylinder and barrel, "RAC" inspector initials on the barrel, cylinder and bottom of the grip, and faint cartouches on both sides of the grip. Matching serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder ("8771"), and barrel ("8771") Condition of this revolver is very good. revolver has a dark mottled patina with traces of original blue finish in the protected areas. Strong amounts of original blue remain on the barrel under the ejector rod housing. Faint patterns of original case colors remain on the frame and hammer. There are a few patches of pitting. The grip is good with a chip near the bottom, some chipping along the edges, hairline crack near the top and some dings mostly on the bottom. Mechanically fine. Buyer pays $20.00 shipping to the lower 48 states. I accept USPS Money Orders or Bank Cashier's Check. Will accept Personal check, with shipping hold. 3% Credit Card Fee!
