Colt House Pistols, 1st model Cloverleaf & 2nd Model, Cased Pair, Restored
Description: This cased set contains an example of Colt’s House Pistols. Both the First Model and the Second Model are represented. This was the first Colt model designed for metallic cartridges, and intended for personal defense. This First Model, SN 161, (Mfg’d 1871) .41 Cal. with a 3 in. barrel, and accommodates only 4 rounds and has become known as the “Cloverleaf” due to cylinder shape. The barrel top is marked “COLT’S HOUSE PISTOL / HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.” The First Model was made from 1871-1874 and Approx. 7500 were made. It is also known as the “Jim Fisk” model. Fisk was an infamous character who in 1869 contributed to a panic in the Gold market which devastated the U.S. economy. He had a mistress who was thought to be the most beautiful woman in the country. He introduced her to his younger partner and romance ensued. The “Love Triangle” ended with the partner shooting Fisk with a Colt Cloverleaf Revolver, SN 4545. This earlier Cloverleaf has its original Ivory grips and has been restored. The frame and barrel have been Nickel Plated. The Hammer, Cylinder, Ejector Rod, and Trigger have been Gold Plated. This is a common appearance when new. This Second Model, SN 9320, (Mfg’d 1875) .41 Cal. with a 2 5/8” Barrel, and holds 5 rounds. This variation was made for only 2 years, 1874-1876 with 2150 to 2500 made. In addition to the same barrel marking as the First model the Second has “PAT. SEPT. 19 1871” marked in the top frame gutter. This Second Model has the original Rose wood grips, the Frame and Barrel have been Nickel Plated. The Hammer, Cylinder, Cylinder Rod, and Trigger have been Gold Plated. This is a common appearance when new. This set is cased in a nicely figured Cherry case with a cleaning rod. A novel addition to enhance the set is an 1871 Dime and an 1876 Dime. Two Colt Letters will be included giving the dates of manufacture but noting that all other records were lost or destroyed years ago. These Colt House Pistols are a beautiful display set and are a milestone in the development of colt firearms, their first cartridge revolvers. A great addition for a Colt collection, or just a handsome display item for your office or gun room. Antique Firearm. Antique firearms, pre 1899 do not require a Federal License.
