Colt Model 1849 Pocket (GUSTAVE YOUNG Factory Engraved, w/ Case, Extras)
Description: Here we present an antique Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver that was made in 1853. This 1849 Pocket Revolver was factory cased and engraved by the famous master engraver Gustave Young. Gustave Young was one of many German immigrants who came to the United States and worked in the firearms industry. However, Young’s talents were most assuredly in engraving and his style set him apart from his contemporaries. This influx of German engravers starting in about 1850 was perhaps the beginning of what has been called the "Golden Age of arms engraving in America". Gustave Young is generally considered to have been one of, if not the best arms engraver active in 19th Century America. Young was Colt’s chief engraving contractor from 1852-1869. This revolver features beautiful, fancy, high-polished burl walnut grips. It is gorgeously engraved by Gustave Young with 80% coverage. The engraving is characterized by Young’s use of a wolf’s head on each side of the hammer, animal faces on the barrel and recoil shield, as well as his broad, floral scroll. The cylinder features a stagecoach hold-up scene. This specimen is in fine condition. The choice burl walnut grips are in excellent condition, showing much of the original varnish. Blue remains on the barrel, especially under the loading lever. A small amount of silver plate remains inside the brass trigger guard. The stagecoach hold-up cylinder scene is excellently preserved and completely visible. All markings are clear, engraving impeccable, typical of Young’s work. Bore is in good condition. The action is excellent. All of the numbers match. This revolver comes complete with an original, mahogany case. Red velvet lines the interior, which was probably replaced at some time in its life. The case contains accoutrements, including a Colt’s Patent bullet mold, a Colt's patent powder flask with an eagle and crossed revolvers, and a tin of percussion caps. All items are also available for sale in our brick & mortar store and are subject to prior sale. Think long, think wrong. Payment On firearms, we typically only accept credit cards or money orders/cashier's checks.
