About Us: A retired lawyer, my interest in Colt Firearms began when I moved to Texas a little over a decade ago. Sparing you the details, I became interested in the Colt Open Top .22. Introduced in 1871, it was the company's first metallic cartridge revolver. No one had examined the gun with particularity and, accordingly, missed the important role the model played in Colt's history of the 1870s. The story is told in full in my book, Colt-Smith & Wesson: A Clash of Arms, which is available on Amazon and my discovercolt. Some of the important points can be sussed out on the . The book was the product of four years' research which necessitated the purchase of a multitude of guns. I am in the process of unloading many of those.
Colt Open Top .22 Type 1 with conical striker, sn 67. One of seventeen known. Plus Book
Description: In 1871, Colt's planted its flag in the metallic cartridge era with the rimfire Open Top .22. This gun, serial number 67, with a conical striker, ejector, and 2 7/8" barrel, is a Type 1. Colt's made fewer than 475 Type 1s and of these only 17 are known. (Though appearing to be centerfire, Type 1s functioned as rimfires.) Colt's made Type 1s to gain experience in manufacturing centerfire strikers and ejectors that would soon be needed for centerfire revolvers. (For ejector evolution visit my at ://discovercolt/colt-open-top-22-ejectors.html or read my book a copy of which will come with this gun). It is from the Initial Production (1871-72) of 6,000 in four types. This gun is mechanically sound. As with many Open Top .22s, the frame was thinly silver-plated in-house. Rarely do you find models with silver remaining. The barrel and cylinder were blued. The cylinder has no finish, but about half the blue remains on the barrel, which, as you can see, sustained damage on the right. The rifling is strong. The serial numbers on the butt and the underside of the barrel match. The gun has the correct barrel address and key (the latch that holds the barrel to the arbor). That said, for condition kindly refer to the images. A chapter in my book, Colt-Smith & Wesson, A Clash of Arms, tells the remarkable story of the OT22. In short, the gun, Colt’s first metallic cartridge revolver, was introduced in 1871. Initial Production (1871-72) was 6,000 guns in four types. The model was then retired in favor of New Lines and SAAs, but not for long. In 1873, Rollin White solicited Congress to restore and extend his patent which had expired in 1869. That gave dealers pause. If White was successful, they’d be liable for selling breech-loading revolvers that infringed his patent. Making matters worse, the nation was thrown into a deep and long depression following the financial panic of 1873. Dealers slammed their order books shut. To prevent massive layoffs and keep the Armory going, Colt’s president Richard Jarvis struck a deal with a group of five dealers. Jarvis agreed to sell the dealers OT22s just below cost and indemnify them against all costs and damages should White’s patent be extended and sue them for infringement. The dealers agreed to purchase collectively 1,000 OT22s a week for a year and 750 a week for a second year. This Second Production (1874-1876) was 106,000 OT22s in two types. In my research for the book (a copy of which is included in this lot), I collected nearly 200 OT22s. You can see part of the collection at my , discovercolt. I am selling a good part of the collection at a substantial discount to that which I believe the guns should sell for at RIA, before premium. If you have any questions, contact me at opentop55yahoo.
