COLT, U.S. CAVALRY, Answorth Inspected, c.1874, Kopec Letter, SN: 8525
Description:
This early Colt U.S. Cavalry SAA was manufactured in 1874, the second year of production, under contract with the U.S. Gov’t. As outlined in the Feb. 2016 dated “Silver Seal” letter from noted Colt SAA authority John A. Kopec, this revolver escaped the Ordnance Dept. recall in 1893 and remains in original Cavalry configuration and has one minor period alteration. Kopec believes this revolver was probably stolen prior to 1893 and notes other revolvers in the same serial number range that he determined were most likely stolen from Co. C of the 8th U.S. Cavalry. The left side of the grip has a distinct “OWA” cartouche for Orville W. Ainsworth, and his “A” markings are found on the back strap by the hammer, at the front of the trigger guard, bottom of the barrel along with a “P”. and on the cylinder along with another “P”. A “C” is in the hammer well slot. It has a rounded blade front sight, “+COLT”S PT. F. A. MFG. Co, HARTFORD, CT, U.S.A.+” on top of the barrel in the early italic font with broken letters. The top strap grooved rear sight has been modified into a slightly larger “V” notch. It has the bullseye ejector rod head, “PAT. SEPT. 19. 1871 / PAT.JULY 2. 1872” on the left side of the frame followed by “U.S.”, and “558” Assy. number on the loading gate. The serial numbers are all matching, “CLARKE CADY” is stamped on the butt strap and “CWC” is carved into the grip on the right side of the back strap, “A” is stamped on the right side. This is certainly ripe for additional historical research.
This revolver displays traces of original case colors on the hammer and small amounts of original blue in protected areas; the ejector housing, and the barrel under the cylinder pin. Kopec states that this revolver has never sustained buffing or refinishing of any kind. The finish remains a natural gray-brown patina. The grips remain outstanding, are properly serial numbered and display a very presentable Ainsworth cartouche”. The grips have a minor chip on each toe, easily repairable if desired. The action is smooth, strong, locks up tight and says C-O-L-T. The chambers are smooth, corrosion free and the bore is generally bright with scattered modest frosting. In summary, the revolver remains in Cavalry configuration and as Kopec said, “is far above average condition”.
