DESIRABLE Scarce LETTERED Antique U.S. COLT M1892 ARMY Model DA REVOLVER
FIRST MILITARY DOUBLE ACTION w/Swing Out Cylinder
Description: DESIRABLE Scarce LETTERED Antique U.S. COLT M1892 ARMY Model DA REVOLVER FIRST MILITARY DOUBLE ACTION w/Swing Out Cylinder Here Ancestry Guns presents a Desirable antique Factory Lettered Renaldo A. Carr Inspected U.S. Colt Model 1892 Army, also referred to as the “New Army & Navy Model” Double Action Revolver, made in 1892 by the Colt Manufacturing Company with a production run from 1892 through 1907 in Hartford, Connecticut. The M1892 Colt Army and Navy was the first general issue double action revolver with a swing out cylinder used by the U.S. military. In 1892 the gun was adopted by the Army in .38 Long Colt caliber, and the revolver was given the name of New Army and Navy. Initial experience with the gun caused officials to request some improvements. This would be an ongoing condition, resulting in Models 1892, 1894, 1896, 1901, and 1903 for the Army, all being a variant of the Model 1892. A Model 1892 revolver was recovered from the USS Maine after it exploded in Havana Harbor in 1898. It was presented to then-Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, who would later become President of the United States. Roosevelt brandished this pistol to rally his Rough Riders during the famed charge up San Juan Hill on July 1, 1898. By the time production ceased in 1907 (the gun would be kept in the government inventory for several years after that) 291,000 of all versions of the Army & Navy had been made. Not a bad track record for an arm that many consider something of a failure. The included factory letter lists this revolver in .38 caliber with a 6 inch barrel, blue finish, and wood grips when part of a shipment of 500 guns of this type sold to the U.S. government and shipped to Col. A. Mordecai at Springfield Armory on April 27, 1893. The revolver has “R.A.C.” inspection marks (Renaldo A. Carr) on the frame and butt of the left grip. Serial number "3440" is on various components, and the barrel is non-matching. “3” is also marked on the frame beneath the cylinder crane. Additional numbers “10001/100/001/1000/01” are stamped on the butt below the standard markings. The overall condition is very fine. Original blue finish. Robust action. Bright, rifled bore. Sharply marked. Numbers match. Both grips are very good with average wear. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 6 inches.
