Description:
ENGRAVED Rare Antique COLT “HOUSE” Model .41 RF Revolver “JUBILEE" JIM FISK

1 of 2,200 Spur Triggers Made Between 1871-1876

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Engraved Colt 5-shot House Model Revolver, made in 1875 in Hartford, Connecticut with a production run between 1871 and 1876. Only about 7,500 of these unique revolvers were made, with only 2,200 of the 5-shot House Models and about 5,300 of them with the distinctive 4-shot, “cloverleaf” cylinder. It was chambered for the .41 Rimfire, a relatively large cartridge for the size of pistol. It was intended for self-defense and succeeded. They were marketed as being good guns for home protection, hence the moniker “House Revolver”. This model Colt was made most infamous in the shooting death of Gilded Age Robber Baron “Jubilee” Jim Fisk. Here’s more on that story;

Fisk, known as “Jubilee Jim,” was a prominent New York City stock and railroad magnate. Starting as a young traveling salesman, he made his fortune in textiles during the Civil War and rose to influence in the railroad industry, even helping oust Cornelius Vanderbilt from the Erie Railroad. He was connected with Tammany Hall boss Tweed. Fisk married but was famously enamored with his mistress Josie Mansfield, fueling Victorian gossip. His close friend and partner, Edward Stokes, also pursued Josie, leading to a rivalry. When Stokes and Josie tried to blackmail Fisk with damaging letters, Fisk went to the police. Enraged, Stokes ambushed Fisk at the Grand Central Hotel and shot him twice with a Colt revolver, killing the 36-year-old financier. Stokes was soon captured and identified as the murderer.

The overall condition is fine. Period New York type engraving with nickel and gold plating on the hammer, trigger, and cylinder arbor. The action of the hammer and trigger are excellent, and the cylinder indexes well, but lockup of the cylinder is intermittent. Fine grips. Markings are worn but remain discernable. Mostly bright bore. Sharp rifling. A truly wonderful spur trigger Colt that fits into any 19th century collection!
