Shipped to HARTLEY & GRAHAM of NEW YORK, NY
Description: LETTERED & J.P. LOWER Marked Antique COLT M1878 FRONTIER .45 DA Revolver Shipped to HARTLEY & GRAHAM of NEW YORK, NY Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Factory Lettered, J.P. Lower Retailer Marked, and Shipped to Hartley & Graham, Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolver, made in 1881 in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1860, Schuyler, Hartley & Graham was the largest firearms dealer in the United States. Jacob Rutsen Schuyler, Marcellus Hartley and Malcolm Graham incorporated their company on March 1, 1854. In 1876 Schuyler retired from the company and by 1880 they changed the name to Hartley and Graham. Malcolm Graham died in December 1899 and the company was reincorporated as M. Hartley Company. J. P. Lower was a famed Denver gunsmith and entrepreneur. Just prior to his death in 1917, Lower related the following to his son who transcribed them. “I sat for hours on end, looking at the mountains, remembering all the experiences my life had provided, good and bad. I saw the men I had wounded, the Indians I had killed and those they had killed, the heaps of buffalo hides and bones, the wasted, rotting carcasses created through my greed. I thought of all the guns I had sold to anyone who needed a weapon, how those weapons might have been used for ill-gotten gains, even murder. The gunrunning days, and all the other seen and unseen deeds of my customers, associated and acquaintances.” The included factory letter confirms the current caliber, barrel length, finish, and grips when the revolver was shipped to Hartley & Graham of New York, NY, on August 5th (on letter as “55”), 1881, as part of a 90 gun shipment. The left side of the frame is stamped “J.P. LOWER” for the famous Colorado gun dealer and gunsmith. The overall condition is fine. Bright original nickel finish is present with some flaking on the frame and barrel. Robust action. Some cylinder wiggle is present when locked up in single action. Shiny bore with sharp rifling. Markings are legible. Both grips are in very good shape with minor handling wear. Numbers match. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.
