Here we present an antique Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver, made in 1853 in Hartford, Connecticut, inside a Period Writing Desk with Photographs, Writing Utensils, Loading Equipment, and Documents. This desk is a wonderful piece that seems to contain no end of interesting pieces of history. The revolver may be what you came for, and that is tucked away in the bottom compartment that was compartmentalized to fit various accoutrements including the firearm, however, there is so much else. With this being a writing desk, it would be appropriate that there would be both a pen as well as an ink well. There is also a candle stand and a taper inside a thin brass container that unscrews at each end. A cap container, a powder flask, and a .31 caliber bullet mold would have been about everything you would need to carry along with the revolver. The final contents of this bottom compartment are one half of a locket with a young lady inside, a clay pipe, and a scissor-like tool. The top half of the lap desk has a compartment that contained three old photographs, two of which are marked on the back with “BOGARDUS/PHOTOGRAPHER/363 Broadway/NEW YORK”. There is a single $100 note from the New Orleans Canal Bank, which was issued on October 1st, 1845. There are two dated railroad cargo receipts, one from the Providence & Worcester Railroad Corporation dated May 15, 1849, and the other from the Boston & Providence Rail Road Company dated March 25, 1852. Finally, there are two hand-written letters regarding orders for rifles and ammunition. Both are from Fort Abraham Lincoln, in what was then the Dakota Territory before North Dakota became a state in 1889, and both are dated in 1875. One is signed by a Wm. M. Kingford, while the other is signed by a M. J. Dualler. This is a fascinating and somewhat mysterious set that one could spend hours researching!

The overall condition of the entire set is near fine. The overall condition of the revolver is very good. The numbers match. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The action is functional, though a bit hesitant on a couple chambers.
