RARE ANTIQUE 45 COLT MODEL 1878 DOUBLE ACTION SHERIFF’S MODEL 3-1/2” BARREL WITH EL PASO, TEXAS HOLSTER.
Description:
Gun Description:
In “Colt's Double Action Revolver, Model of 1878” by Don Wilkerson, he notes that only 1238 Sheriffs models were made among the 51,210 of total production. There were 560 in 45 Colt, including 2-1/2” (7), 3” (24), 3-1/2” (63), 4” (45), 4-3/4” (5), 5-1/2” (5), and 7-1/2” (5).
Overall, this gun retains 20% blue, with left & right frame panels at 70%, trigger guard 5%, backstrap 0%, trigger strap 0%, and barrel 2%. Remaining surfaces are a smooth dark gray. The butt area has a spotty appearance from cleaned very light pitting.
All markings, including barrel address, caliber, rampant Colt, and serial numbers are very clear. The serial number 28889 appears deeply struck on butt. The cylinder #887 is a simple factory error. Serial numbers were placed on gates until the 7xxx range, and afterward the gate was given an assembly number. On this 45 the gate #60 is also found on the left grip frame under the grips.
The mechanism works properly in both single and double action. As with all of these, the final cylinder lockup occurs when the trigger releases the hammer. The bore is excellent, with strong lands and grooves and expected light scattered pitting. The grips are original, but a chip occurred where the left grip locator pin exists.
These sheriff models are seen both with and without lanyard rings. This gun is more practical, made without a lanyard.
Factory letter confirms 45/c, 3-1/2", Blue, Stocks Not Listed, & shipped to Simmons Hdwe Co., St. louis, MO on 9-24-1892, 2 guns.
Holster Description
This gun was purchased 20 years ago with this El Paso holster. Whether the gun had some past El Paso connection, I do not know. The holster was obviously made to fit ONLY a 3-1/2” or 4” Colt M1878 DA Sheriff’s model. This holster has undergone some modifications over the years, but the main Pouch Section remains original. The leather is pliable, and the stitching is tight and sound. Stamped deeply on the lower right side is “Shelton-Payne Arms Co. / El Paso, Texas.”.
