Rare Colt Model 1889 Navy Belonging to Lt. Col. Royal Artillery
Description:
Serial #6976, .38 Colt, 4 1/2" barrel with an excellent, bright bore.
This is an 1890-made revolver with the upside-down patent markings and British retailer name engraved along the top: “S.W. SILVER & Co. LONDON".
The metal retains 90-92% of the original blue finish with thin, plum-brown freckling mixing smoothly on the frame; heavier on the cylinder.
Crisp London proofs are visible and, “CAPTN. CLOSE. / R.A." is neatly engraved on the left side of the frame, just ahead of the grip.
The dark brown Colt hard rubber grips are in fine shape with only some small handling marks, very little flattening of the points, and some slight discoloration at the butt on either panel.
The lock-up is tight, and the action functions flawlessly.
Frederick Alfred MacDonald Close was born on August 13, 1860 in Brighton, and was the son of Col. F.A. Close, Bengal Cavalry.
He was admitted as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in April of 1879, and was promoted to Captain in September of 1887.
In April of 1897, Captain Close was promoted to Major, and obtained a 1st Class Certificate from the Gunnery Staff Course.
In 1899, he became an instructor at the School of Gunnery.
After his term as an instructor ended in 1904, he was appointed Lt. Colonel of Reserve Officers, and commanded the Royal Garrison Artillery at Cardiff in Wales.
In 1907 he was appointed to be Chief Instructor of Gunnery.
He retired on November 22, 1911, and passed away on March 15, 1919 from pneumonia following the flu.
This is a splendid, seldom seen DA Colt, in excellent condition, and owned by a prominent British artilleryman.
It would make a splendid addition to any collection.
