Colt 1909 .45 Colt Revolver - 1910 Philippines Shipment for Changing to .45 Colt from .38
Description: Description: Colt 1909 .45 Colt Revolver - Issued to 1909 Philippines insurrection. Historically significant early shipment to change military sidearms from .38c to .45c caliber.
The Philippine Moro Rebellion after the Spanish American War demonstrated factually that the .38 Colt was an unsatisfactory man stopper. The Moros would take a cylinder of .38 Colt’s and keep on coming. With the result that many American Soldiers were either seriously wounded or killed by the Moro’s knives and machetes. The Army replaced the .38’s with .45 Colts. One of the .45 rounds often did what six of the .38 Colt’s bullets could not do. Stop a charging Moro cold. The War Department placed initial orders for 6000 New Service revolvers Caliber .45, on December, 17 1908. They were officially designated as" Colt's Double-Action Revolver, Caliber .45, Model of 1909". The marking "U.S. ARMY MODEL 1909, N0. 34130. The serial number marked on the butt is the same number stamped under the receiver as well as on the crane. All numbers match. The cylinder latch was marked on the rear with the last 4 digits of the serial number. The stocks were hand numbered inside as well as marked on the butt with the inspectors initials "RAC" (Renaldo A. Carr.) The right side of the receiver was also marked with the initials of the inspector as well as with those of the "Army Inspector of Ordnance". Additional orders were placed in 1910 and 1911 for a grand total of 19,503 pistols. The pistols were serial numbered from 30001 through 49503. This one is number 34130. Bore shiny and riflings still very strong. Grips generally good and solid with some dents and a scrape. 85% Blue remaining.
