Colt 38, Government Model 1905, U.S. Marine Corps
Description: The Colt Gov. Model 1905 revolver was manufactured pre-WWI. The total service personnel of the United State Marine Corps at this time amounted to approximately 9,000. As such, Congress authorized the USMC to purchase its own handguns. This pistol is very similar to the Colt .38 D. A. of the Army and Navy, but is distinguished by the unique round pistol butt configuration. Reportedly, only 812 of these were sold to and manufactured for the Corps. Each was marked on the pistol's butt with a serial number of between 1 and 812. This revolvers Marine Corps SN is #530. The assembly number are properly matching on the frame, crane, cylinder latch and both grips (#114). The pistol is generally silver/brown patina. There are scratches and handling marks as well as areas of old rust pits on the top of the frame. The grips are in good condition with a few minor marks (no chips or cracks). The mechanics of the pistol are fair. The action works properly but there is some looseness at lock up. This is a collectors item - NOT a shooter. The bore rates poor to fair with rifling showing rust/pitting. The rampant Colt trademark is clearly visible on the left rear of the frame and the USMC markings are well struck as well. The revolvers saw service with the Marines in Panama as well as the Cuba landings under Theodore Roosevelt's Presidency. The weapon is not in pristine condition, but then again it is over 100 years old. A great piece of USMC and military history to own.
