Texas Sheriff History... Sir Sacheverell-Bateman
Description:
This Colt SAA revolver has a unique and colorful history. This revolver was once the property of Hugh Alleyne Sir Sacheverell-Bateman (1860-1896), an eccentric English Baronet, explorer and one time Sheriff of the town of El Rosasio in Hidalgo County Texas. This revolver was reportedly used in several shootings in El Rosario circa 1883-1884 and later accompanied it's owner on a solo horseback expedition across China, Tibet, and the Himalayas (1887-1888) as well as a dog sled crossing of the Greenland ice cap several years later.
This Colt specimen is mechanically crisp. The original nickel finish has flaked from approximately 80% of the barrel, 30% from the frame, and 80% of the cylinder. The barrel address is correct, somewhat faint, but readable. Patent dates are clear and serial numbers match. Bore is good, and the original gutta percha grips displaying the eagle logo are crisp and show only modest wear.
The value of this Colt SAA revolver is enhanced by it's history, provenance and the events in which it participated. It should be noted that Hugh Sacheverell-Bateman was considered one of the finest pistol shots from Victorian England, a skill that played a role during his time as Sheriff of El Rosario, Texas.
Colt Historical Letter and all documentation and provenance is included. All inquires are welcome. Shipping will be actual cost.
