Colt New Model Breech Loading Police Pistol Type 2 Chambered in .38 Rimfire
Description:
This antique revolver was Colt's first true cartridge pistol manufactured as such. The New Model Breech Loading Police Pistol was built from a combination of left over parts from the percussion model Police revolver and newly made parts speicifcally for this model. The "Type 2" model is identified by the round cylinder instead of the fluted cylinder of the "Type 1". It was made in 3 barrel lengths with 2/3rds of production fitted with a 4.5" inch barrel, and the remainder split between 5.5" and 6.5" inches. Colt offered two chamberings, .38 Colt Rimfire and .38 Colt Centerfire. The .38 Rimfire chambering accounted for over 80% of production. Both nickel and blue finishes were offered with production almost evenly split between the two. These pistols can be readily identified as originally made for cartridges rather than a conversion of a percussion gun by the serial number range, which we know is 1 to about 13,500. This example is serial number 10,035 and is all matching. It has 90% of the original beautiful nickel plated finish still intact, and the blued small parts still look great as well. The original smooth 1-piece Walnut grip is in excellent shape. It retains 95% of the original varnish and is free from cracks or repairs. The action on this Colt is outstanding. It is still "in-time" and locks up perfectly. Everything on this antique revolver works exactly as it was designed to. It is obvious that this gun has had a very easy life and was actually fired very little. If you have been looking for a Type 2 New Model Breech Loading Police Pistol, it would be very hard to find an all-original example in better condition than this one.
