Description:
SOLD PENDING FUNDS.
Offered for sale is one (1) Antique Colt Type 1 New Model Breech Loading Police Pistol, .38 caliber rimfire, 4.5" barrel, and original nickel plated. The serial #317 is found on the barrel, frame, triggerguard, on the grip with the backstrap removed, on base of backstrap, and last two digits on the rear face of the cylinder. The assembly number for this gun is #159. The assembly number for original cartridge guns are found on the gate, on the frame under the trigger-guard, on the concealed back of the conversion ring and on the cylinder arbor. I did not remove the conversion ring, but assembly #159 is present on all the required parts. These have been captured in the photos. The bore and cylinder chambers are in near excellent condition with very little discoloration. Remaining nickel on frame, cylinder, back-strap, hammer, and trigger guard would rate 80%. Barrel proper has about 5% nickel remaining, ejector rod approximately 75%. The unnumbered wedge has some nickel on the underside. Original "pad" with concentric circles on the ejector rod is tight with a good spring. Action works perfectly and cylinder lock up tight. The rimfire plate on the left side of the hammer is tight with no damage to the tip. Gun overall, the nickel would rate 50%, stocks would rate near excellent with minor finish wear toward the heel. Both sides of the stock have a tight fit to the frame, with no chips or cracks.
Following, is general information on this type Colt Breech Loader. Should you have a book by Breslin-Pirie-Price titled "Variations of Colt's New Model Police & Pocket Breech Loading Pistols", this model is covered on pages 50-54.
Colt Type 1 New Model Breech Loading Police Pistol production began in July 1871. These pistols incorporated a modified round 1862 Police barrel, the fluted cylinder and what is called the first or "A" type frame, complete with ejector and gate with an inside spring. Type "A"-style frames were serial numbered from 1 to about 5000. Characteristics of the frame type are a stacked Colts Patent ("Colts" above "Patent"), a small hammer screw, and an insided gate spring. As a note here, guns converted from previously finished percussion pistols have "Pat. July.25.1871 over Pat. July 2. 1872" on the frame, a large hammer screw and an outside gate spring.
