Rare Antique Rogers & Spencer Conversion To .45 Caliber.. 85%
Factory Blue.. Mint Bore.. Like new mechanics !!!!
Description: SOLD...Antique Rogers and Spencer conversion. Here is a gun that is very rarely found.. Rogers and Spencer conversion to .45 caliber. These were converted to .44 and .45 calibers. These rare conversions are mentioned on page 425 in the late Bruce McDowell's fantastic book “ A Study of Colt Conversions “.. This one will chamber the .45 Colt but I would shoot the shorter .45 S&W as the cylinder walls are thin on these .45 caliber conversions.. As you can see in the photo of the rear of the cylinder, one of the chambers is pretty thin.. I left that one empty when I shot it... And YES, I have fired this thing with the .45 S&W black powder ammo.. It backs out the primers a little and it bulges the cases so not a gun you want to go out and shoot all day.. If I find the time, I think I can fix the backed out primer problem but not the bulged cases.. The cylinder chambers are rough bored and the only way to fix this problem would be to line the cylinder chambers to a .smaller caliber, say a .38 and then reline the bore to that caliber.. Bobby Hoyt is the man for this job... Other than that it is mechanically tight as a new gun.. It indexes perfectly and locks up tight as new with absolutely no cylinder movement side to side or front to rear.. The bore is mint like new and still retains the factory blue inside the bore as can be seen with a flash light.. Also I took a photo of the bore and you can see the blue.. !!!!! As for the condition I think the photos tell the story.. Over all this gun retains a boat load of factory blue from its percussion days... I would rate the barrel and frame at about 85% or more nice bright blue.. The cylinder has faded to a medium brown patina with some thinning blue. It has the cut out on the right side of the frame for loading and unloading.. The percussion rammer has been removed as you can see and a simple pin is in place to retain the cylinder. Matching S/N on the barrel, frame and cylinder.. The grips are chipped on the bottom of both sides as is common on the R&S's as they have a very wide flare on the bottom.. Original front sight. Excellent frame markings.. Screw heads are clean and not all burred up.. Over all this is a very rare and hard to find conversion. It shoots like a new gun but for the mentioned issues.. Shoot it as it is, or have it converted to a .38 or don't shoot it at all.. It is up to you.. If it does not sell, I might be calling Bobby Hoyt..?? Call me at 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos.. I want happy customers.. $30 insured shipping.. SOLD Antique: Yes |
