Rare Colt 1851 Navy, Navy-Marked, Richards-Mason Conversion, 1 of only 615, 38 Centerfire
Description: Original Colt 1851 Navy that was converted from 36 caliber percussion to 38 centerfire using the Richards-Mason conversion system. Serial # 59011 was originally made in 1856 and is a "Navy-Navy" as evidenced by the "US" marking under the "COLT PATENT" marking on the left side of the frame, the iron back strap and grip strap, and the "U.S.N." stamping on the bottom of the grip strap. It also has the "J.L.H." marking on the bottom of the grip strap - James L. Henderson inspected the 615 early Navy-Navy revolvers received at the Norfolk Navy Yard. This is the only documented batch of Colt 1851 Navys to go to Norfolk, and not all were converted to centerfire later on, so there aren't many of these available to the collector. Bottom of left grip is marked "E.C.G." for E.C. Grafton, listed as a Navy inspector in 1861. The cylinder shows no traces of the original battle scene and just the last two digits "41" of the original percussion serial #. The rear face of the cylinder has the numbers "011" to match the last 3 digits of the serial # of the revolver after the conversion. The loading gate and arbor have matching assembly # 724. Common of these factory conversions, the wedge is not numbered. Top of the barrel has the "Address Saml Colt New-York City" marking. Of the approximately 6000 conversions ordered from Colt directly by the US Navy, less than 615 will have this combination of markings. Left side of the frame has the correct 2-line patent markings put on the conversions by the Colt factory. Overall condition is an even patina with some plum remaining on the frame. Original walnut grips have never been refinished or sanded, do show typical wear and usage and some loss at the corners. Bore in the 7.5" octagon barrel is good with strong rifling and typical scattered black powder pitting. Action is very strong and tight. Cylinder has no movement and indexes perfectly every time. Barrel/frame junction has slight play due to looseness from being taken apart for 160+ years. All original except for the replacement ejector housing screw. A very rare 1851 Navy-Navy Colt conversion that you'll definitely want to add to your collection. 315.251.4799 with questions or concerns.
