COLT 4-3/4” SSA .45 CUSTOM SHOP MASTER-ENGRAVED NICKEL BIRD’S HEAD BACKSTRAP, WITH ONE-PIECE BUFFALO HORN GRIP HAND FITTED BY NUTMEG – UNFIRED
Description:
Type “B” Master Engraved (and initialed) by “G.S.,” presumably the esteemed George Spring. Fire blue screws, base pin and ejector rod head. According to the Colt Serial Number Look Up, it was manufactured in 1990.
I purchased this gun in in 2019 without the original ivory grips and sent it to Nutmeg Sports for custom one-piece buffalo horn grip, custom tuned action job and re-cutting and polishing of the forcing cone with the intent of actually shooting the gun, but I never have – it remains unfired. (Nutmeg has been used by the Colt Custom Shop for grips, and they did a magnificent job on this gun. It really is a beautiful piece. They featured it on their Facebook page on March 31, 2020.) The finish is excellent, but with a few fine scratches and intentations (including on a portion of the cylindar where the gun may have been layed on an improper surface as shwon in one of the attached photos.)
The original box is included. The box is tattered a bit and torn at one end, but the label is intact. One of the foam box halves appears not to match the other so one or both may not be original. The paperwork missing.
Were this gun to be ordered from the Colt Custom Shop today (with walnut grips), it would cost at least $12,725 ($7,000 of which is for B Master engraving), and it would probably be a long wait. I say “at least,” because the Custom Shop prices grips of materials other than walnut, on request, and I assume buffalo would be more expensive than walnut.
