Introduced by Colt's Manufacturing Company in 1927, the Detective Special became the first successful concealable revolver to offer six shot capacity in a compact frame. This innovation set it apart from most small revolvers of the era, which typically held only five rounds. The revolver quickly became the preferred sidearm of detectives, plain clothes law enforcement officers, and private citizens who wanted a dependable defensive revolver with greater capacity.
