Colt Detective Special 2nd Issue Made 1972 with Original Box
Description: The Detective Special was one of the most popular conceal/defense revolvers of its time, and certainly one of the most famous. Unlike its Smith & Wesson counterpart the Chief’s Special (later the Model 36), the Detective Special held six shots instead of five. Colt was always more than willing to play up this fact in its advertisements. The reason behind this lay in the design of each revolver. Colt’s D frame was designed to be large enough to allow six cartridges in the .38 S&W/.38 Special class while Smith & Wesson’s I and J-frame revolvers were designed around having capacity for six .32-caliber cartridges or, alternatively, five of the .38’s. In the end, for a slightly larger size, the Detective special offered the buyer a better capacity for the firepower provided than its competitor. This example has a beautiful nickel finish. The bore is in excellent condition. On the cylinder there is a small group of tiny spots of pitting over one chamber, and one singular spot on the other side. These are shown in the pictures. The face of the cylinder has light powder burns. There is a thin line of wear in the nickel finish on the left side of the hammer. Mechanically, the Detective Special is in superb condition and locks up perfectly. According to the Colt serial number database, this revolver left the factory in 1972. It also comes with its original Colt box and nice Galco leather holster (not pictured). It would make a very nice addition to any Police Firearms or Colt collection.
