Excellent Early Colt Detective Special - 1929 production
Description: An excellent original early - 1929 - example of the famous Colt 'Detective Special' .38 revolver. The ‘Detective Special’ was designed by Colt to fill the needs of police detectives and plainclothes officers in need of a compact sidearm in .38 special caliber. The first examples were produced in 1928 making this 1929 Colt is therefore an early example of its type. The ‘Detective Special’ became very popular with Lawmen and also developed quite a following among assorted gangsters, bootleggers, and others on both sides of the law during the ‘Roaring Twenties’ and throughout the dangerous cops & robbers days off the 1930s. The 'Detective Special' became famous as the ‘Snub-Nose-Colt’ in the folk lore of the period both in print and on movie screens. The great majority of early Colt ‘Detective Specials’ were the working guns of whatever side of the law their owners favored and consequently excellent original condition examples are pretty scarce. This 1929 ‘Detective Special’ is in excellent original condition. The steel surfaces retain 98% original factory blued finish with the slightest bit of high edge wear and pinpoint aging. The bore and mechanics are in excellent condition. The of-the-period genuine mother of pearl grips have especially fine color, graining, and patina. This deluxe ’Snub-Nose-Colt’ could have been the pet of someone who liked bullet proof Cadillacs and Stutz Bearcat roadsters. These days it would go well in any collection of high condition Colt revolvers and be hard to up-grade. This Colt has been in a private collection since the 1990s.
