Here we present a Colt New Police Revolver, made in 1904 by the Colt Manufacturing Company with a production run from 1896 through 1907 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt New Police is a double-action, six-shot revolver that can be fired in single or double action. The gun was chambered in the .32 New Police, which is dimensionally identical to a flat-nose version of the .32 S&W Long, except for the nose shape. In addition to the .32 New Police cartridge, the revolver was available in 32 Colt. The diameters of the two cartridges are not the same, with the 32 Colt being approximately 0.020 inches smaller in diameter than the New Police. The later.32 New Police chambering was more popular than the 32 Colt chambering.
In 1904, the Richmond Police Department, like many urban police departments of the time, was in a period of transition and growth as cities in the United States were expanding rapidly. The department would have been responsible for maintaining public order, enforcing the law, and addressing issues related to crime in an increasingly urban environment. There is some evidence the inscribed number on the revolver (“24”) may have matched the badge number of the officer it belonged to.
The overall condition is very good. Original brown patina. In single action, the revolver functions fully with a little bit of cylinder movement when locked up. When used in double, some resistance is felt in the trigger pull but fully functions otherwise. Bright bore with spotted pitting. Both grips are in good shape with an expected amount of handling wear. Sharp markings. Backstrap is clearly inscribed “RICHMOND POLICE DEPARTMENT 24”. Visible numbers match. An “&” is present on the frame by the serial numbers.
