Colt New Police 2 1/2” Revolver in .32 Police Cartridge & Shipped to the President of Colt in 1901
Description:
Offered is a Colt New Police .32 chambered in the hard to find 2 1/2” barrel length with interesting history. This gun has a factory Colt letter showing it was shipped to Colonel W.C. Skinner who served as President of the Colt Company from 1909-1911. He was then elected as Chairman of the Board from 1911-1916 at which time he was re-elected at President of Colt and served from 1916-1921. The letter shows that while the gun was delivered to President Skinner it was for Robert H. Schutz who was president of Smyth Manufacturing Company which makes bookbinding machines even today. They were a pioneer in the book binding industry and a lot can be found on the company as well as Robert H. Schutz whose home is currently in the Guide for Historic Hartford, Connecticut. One can probably assume that Smyth Manufacturing Company undoubtedly did a lot of work for Colt and this gun was a gift to their President.
The Colt New Police pre-dated the Police Positive revolver that it eventually became and was produced from 1897-1908 with a total production of just 49,500 guns. It was offered in three barrel lengths, the 2 1/2”, 3 1/2” (Most common) & 6” barrel lengths. The shorter 2 1/2” barrel length is very desirable as the production was low on this model and few are encountered. This gun was shipped in July of 1901 and remains in excellent mechanical condition with a very good bore. The factory original hard rubber stocks are free from cracks and chips and in very good condition. The bluing is strong throughout the gun with the exception of an area on the left side where a small section has faded (see 4th photo). This gun comes with a Colt factory letter, very good original box and photo of Colonel Skinner. This gun was also shown in Gary Peer's excellent book: the Colt Double-Action Snub-Nose (Pocket) Revolver. A copy is shown for reference but is not included with this sale as it is my only copy and I have other guns in the book.
I offer a three day non firing inspection period and always want the buyer to be satisfied with their purchase. The gun will be packed correctly and shipped via FedEx Air with insurance to your FFL dealer in the continental United States for $55 (California is extra because I have to ship through my local dealer). This gun requires a C&R or FFL license for transfer. I ship the following day after the payment arrives and provide tracking information. Please see my other Colts and various collectible firearms that I have listed. Thanks for your interest and please let me know if you have any questions. Price is $2850.00 plus shipping.
Please Note: A same as cash price Lay-A-Way plan is available on this gun. Please call to discuss.
