ONE OF COLT'S EARLIEST SNUB-NOSED REVOLVERS IS THIS NEW POLICE MODEL IN .32 NEW POLICE CALIBER (.32 S&W LONG) WITH RARE 2 1/2" BARREL, #17XXX, MADE 1904. This is the model Theodore Roosevelt ordered (with 4" barrel) for the New York City Police Dept. when he was police commissioner there in 1897. These were made with 2 1/2", 4" and 6" barrels. Most encountered have the 4" barrel with 6" being fairly scarce and the short 2 1/2" quite rare. Most people wanting a short barrel revolver bought the New Pocket Model with rounded butt and typically short barrel. This example is in fine condition retaining most of the original bright blue with only some very light mixing with plum/brown on the frame behind the cylinder on both sides and along the top strap. Still retains nice fire blue on the hammer top and trigger sides. Excellent grips and bright excellent bore. All correct sharp markings including the "COLT'S NEW POLICE" stamping in a circle around the rampant colt on the left side of the frame. The front sight has NOT been altered and mechanically it is excellent. As this was an early model only made between 1896-1907 before being replaced by the Police Positive, examples are difficult to find especially in fine condition and particularly in this rare short barrel length. Many Colt collectors have never seen one like this.
