High original condition U.S. Navy Contract Colt Model 1909 double action revolver, .45 caliber, one of only 1,000 manufactured for naval service, with U.S.N. anchor markings and Navy property number 938, high polish blue finish, serial number 52938.
Description:
Extraordinary example of U.S. Navy Contract Colt Model 1909 (.45 caliber) whose production was limited to 1000 firearms. This revolver has the Colt high polish blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The ejector rod and lanyard swivel are casehardened. The trigger and hammer are niter blued and the sides of the hammer are polished bright. The top of the barrel marked Hartford address and 1884, 1900 and 1905 dates in two-lines. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the caliber ("COLT D.A. 45") with Rampant Colt above a stylized "C". The Colt "Triangle/VP" proofmark is stamped on the left side of the frame above the front trigger guard bow and the assembler's number "3" is stamped over the left rear trigger guard bow. The Colt serial number is stamped on the inside of the frame and crane. The partial serial number "2938" is stamped on the back of the cylinder latch. All of the visible serial numbers match except the inside of each grip panel, penciled numbered “52941”. The two-piece grips are smooth black walnut. The revolver butt is roll-stamped "U.S.N." above an anchor and "45 D.A." behind the lanyard swivel and stamped with the Navy property number "No./938" in front of the swivel.
Condition:
VG/EXC with sharp edge wear and handling marks as one might expect from a holstered service revolver that has been carried but whose firing has been limited. Comparable condition fire blued small parts showing no enhancement. Similar condition grips, slight oil staining, with a scattering light handling marks, particularly on the left panel as carefully photographed. Mirror bright bore. Perfect manual mechanics. A high condition, original finish, Colt 1909 Navy revolver that should please any Colt/US Military collector.
