Colt’s .44 Caliber Single Action Army with Ivory Grips!

Here we present an antique Factory Lettered Colt Model 1873 Frontier Six-Shooter Single Action Army Revolver in .44-40 WCF, manufactured in 1898 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt Frontier, or Frontier Six-Shooter was Colt's 1873 revolver chambered in .44-40 Winchester caliber instead of .45 so that it was compatible with Winchester’s Model 1873 ammunition. Production began in 1877. “Colt Frontier Six-Shooter” was the actual name of the Colt pistol model, and this was originally acid-etched on the left side of the barrel. Later, the legend was roll-stamped until 1919, when the caliber designation ".44-40" was added. These revolvers made excellent companions to rifles at the time as they were chambered for the same ammunition, meaning that the user only had to keep one type to feed both guns.

Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

This revolver letters as you see it with the exception that the hard rubber grips have been replaced with ivories: 5 ½” barrel in .44 Winchester. It was shipped to Colt’s Patent Firearms Co. San Francisco Agency in California along with 24 others 5 February 1898.

The overall condition is very good. Original gray patina throughout. The action is excellent with all cock-notches holding, all 4 clicks, and solid cylinder lockup. The bore is in very good condition: reflective with good rifling. The antique ivory grips are solid and in great shape. The numbers match. A very nice, lettered Frontier in .44 shipped to Colt’s Agency in California at the end of the 19th Century!
