Colt ~ Frontier Six Shooter (Gen 1) ~ .44/40
Description:
The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver as shipped on April 20, 1920, to J.B. Davis Arms Co. in Portland, Maine, in .44 caliber, with a 5 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, and type of grips not listed, as the only gun of its type in the shipment. The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line Colt Hartford address, with "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER .44-40" on the left side. The left of the frame has the two-line patent date markings followed by a Rampant Colt. Matching visible full serial numbers marked on the frame, trigger guard, and grip straps, with "9374" hand etched on the interiors of the grips, an unnumbered cylinder, and matching assembly number "492" on the loading gate and rear surface of the frame. London proofs appear on the barrel, frame, and cylinder, with "NOT ENGLISH MAKE" stamped on the right of the frame, a marking primarily seen applied to American manufactured guns sent overseas to Britain during the World War II era. Fine as factory quality refurbished, retains 85% blue finish, 20% plus vibrant patterns of case colors, with freckling and smooth brown/gray patina on the balance, and distinct markings and edges in the metal overall. The grips are also fine, with well-defined edges, a few minor chips, and crisp checkering and logos. Mechanically excellent.
