Interestingly, Colt manufactured 51,210 Model 1878s and of these only 5,132 were .44-40s in blue finish with 7 ½” barrels- that’s only about 10% of the total made. This example in the serial number range 42XXX (1899 manufacture) was shipped to Sears, Roebuck & Co., Chicago, Illinois on August 4, 1900. Chicago was one of the largest meat packing destinations for cattle in the latter half of the 19th century and early 20th century, making this a center for those in the cattle business and a good market for big .44-40 caliber Colts! This example shows only modest handling/blue wear mainly on the grip straps and trigger guard- typical holster wear. The barrel retains most of the beautiful, rich Colt blue of the period and the outside edge of the ejector housing shows good lightly aged blue. This example in the serial number range 42XXX (1899 manufacture) was shipped to Sears, Roebuck & Co., Chicago, Illinois on August 4, 1900. Chicago was one of the largest meat packing destinations for cattle in the latter half of the 19th century and early 20th century, making this a center for those in the cattle business and a good market for big .44-40 caliber Colts!
