VERY FINE CONDITION 1878 .44-40 DOUBLE ACTION FRONTIER REVOLVER, 7 ½” BARREL AND FACTORY LETTER
Description: VERY FINE CONDITION 1878 .44-40 DOUBLE ACTION FRONTIER REVOLVER WITH 7 ½” BARREL AND FACTORY LETTER. Interestingly, Colt manufactured 51,210 Model 1878s and of these only 5,132 were .44-40s in blue finish with 7 ½” barrels- that’s only about 10% of the total made. This example in the serial number range 42XXX (1899 manufacture) was shipped to Sears, Roebuck & Co., Chicago, Illinois on August 4, 1900. Chicago was one of the largest meat packing destinations for cattle in the latter half of the 19th century and early 20th century, making this a center for those in the cattle business and a good market for big .44-40 caliber Colts! This example shows only modest handling/blue wear mainly on the grip straps and trigger guard- typical holster wear. The barrel retains most of the beautiful, rich Colt blue of the period and the outside edge of the ejector housing shows good lightly aged blue. The frame and cylinder also display fine blue with only normal light thinning/wear with excellent screw heads and still some good fire blue on the trigger and back of the hammer. Tight action, exc. grips show light wear only, front sight has not been filed or altered, tight action, lanyard ring intact, bright exc. bore. A superior big Frontier Colt with factory letter. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: COLT Model: 1878 DOUBLE ACTION FRONTIER Serial Number: 42XXX Caliber Info: .44-40 Condition: EXC. Barrels: 7 1/2 Finish: BLUE
