COLT Model 1861 .36 “Navy”
Description: One of the last percussion pistols introduced by Colt, only 37,000 were manufactured. These were used by the US Army/Navy in the Civil War. This Colt Navy was manufactured in 1861 (the beginning the American Civil War). This example has been engraved by Gustavo Young (Jung), one of the premier engravers of the day. Mr. Young worked for Colt from 1850 until the mid 1860s. The pistol is in working order and was well used. The pistol is a matching serial number exple. Note, the barrel wedge, trigger guard, barrel, base pin and the frame all are numbered and matching. The grips are in good shape, but well worn and rounded. There is a tiny bit of silver plate still on the trigger guard. There’s no serial number on the bottom of back strap. The top barrel is marked “ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA.” The cylinder is stamped with “COLTS PATENT” and “ENGAGE 16 MAY 1843“ with a naval battle scene. The left side of the frame is marked “COLTS PATENT“ the caliber of .36 CAL. is covered by engraving. This is a very special firearm. Usually, but not always, finely engraved firearms were given at that time as a special gift to a loved one (a wife to husband or a betrothed). I can only guess that it may have been carried by an officer in the Civil War, as it was well used, yet well cared for. This was not a gun that sat in a box and was never fired, so in my mind, it has more value than most. The engraving certainly makes it very, very special pistol. Please look at photos. No international shipping. Shipping and handling will be determined a date of sale. Thanks for looking.
