CASED 7-Shot COLT NEW LINE .22 Short F.T. BAKER Fleet Street London Antique Small Pocket Revolver for the British Market

Description:
CASED 7-Shot COLT NEW LINE .22 Short F.T. BAKER Fleet Street London Antique

Small Pocket Revolver for the British Market

Here we present an antique Cased F.T. Baker Colt New Line .22 Revolver, made in 1876 in Hartford, Connecticut. The “New Line” was a single action pocket revolver introduced by the Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1873 and continued through 1884, with the .22 caliber being manufactured between 1873 and 1877 with a total of roughly 55,343 being manufactured.

This revolver was designed to be a small but potent self-defense revolver for stowing in one’s pocket in the 19th Century. Spur Trigger “Suicide Special” manufacture was fierce during this time, and Colt struggled to compete against the countless small shops making very similar, less expensive revolvers, though not necessarily of the same quality. The Colt remained a steady, reliable force in firearms for much longer than the rest.

The revolver features 7 shots of .22 rimfire. Of all the Colt “New Line” revolvers made, the .22 caliber was the only one featuring a 7 shot cylinder. All other calibers utilized a 5-shot cylinder. The patent dates are on the bottom of the barrel. Two years after the Colt House Revolver, a year after the Colt Open Top, and almost simultaneously alongside the Colt Peacemaker, the Colt New Line was one of the first metallic cartridge, rear-loading revolvers manufactured by Colt.

The backstrap on this example is marked “F.T. Baker 88 Fleet St. London”. According to the book British Gunmakers, Vol. I & II by Nigel Brown, Frederick T. Baker took over the business of Thomas Kerslake Baker at 88 Fleet Street in London in 1857. He moved to 21 Cockspur Street in Southwest London between 1882 and 1898, and then back to 88 Fleet Street between 1899 and 1900.

The overall condition is fine. Original nickel and fire blue finish. Clear markings. Matching numbers. The action is excellent. The bore is in nice condition with good rifling. Case dimensions are approximately 6” x 3-3/4”.
