Description: BROWNING BROTHERS SLC, UTAH COLT NEW SERVICE .44-40 WCF Revolver 7 ½” C&R FACTORY LETTERED to 1899 with EARLY SERIAL NO. Here we present a C&R Browning Brothers Shipped Colt “New Service” Revolver, made in 1899 in Hartford, Connecticut, with a Colt Archival Letter. The letter states that this revolver was blued and had a 5 ½” barrel when it and another were shipped to the Browning Brothers in Utah in October of 1899. John Moses Browning was designing for Colt at this time and part of his compensation was in guns shipped to the family-owned stores their home state. This revolver would have been a great companion to one of JMB’s other famous inventions, the Winchester Model 1892 in the same chambering. This one is also interesting due to the provenance scratched into the interior of the left grip panel, which reads: “CLARENCE Worthington 81857 East Salt LAKE CITY UTAH”. The Colt New Service is a large frame, large caliber, double-action revolver made by Colt from 1898 until 1946. In 1898, Colt Firearms released a new six-shot revolver chambered for the .45 Long Colt cartridge as the Model 1898 - better known as the "Colt New Service". As the years progressed, it was chambered in .38-40 WCF, .44 Russian, .44-40 WCF, .44 Special, .45 Long Colt, .455 Webley, and later .45 ACP, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, along with other less common calibers. The New Service line would end up being produced from 1898 to 1946 to the tune of over 356,000. The New Service line was adopted by the United States military through the Army, Marine Corps and Navy service branches, these under the designation of "Model 1909" and retaining the .45 Colt chambering. The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The barrel has been replaced at some point with a longer 7 ½” example. The numbers on the frame and the crane match and are “592”. The left grip has a stable split. A neat gun with Browning provenance! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.
