EARLY NEW SERVICE .44-40 WITH DESIRABLE 7 1/2" BARREL, #6XXX, MADE 1901
Description: LOW SERIAL NUMBER VERY EARLY MANUFACTURED NEW SERVICE .44-40 WITH DESIRABLE 7 1/2" BARREL, #6XXX, MADE 1901, correct last patent date on the barrel top of 1900, this is a great condition New Service considering these early Frontier .44-40s were usually paired with a like caliber rifle or carbine and used hard in the West, in fact, this one came out of Arizona, shows all the correct early markings including the "New Service" in a circle around the rampant Colt on the frame (used only on the earliest guns) and "NEW SERVICE CAL.44" on the barrel side- later guns said .44-40, exc. hard rubber grips numbered to the gun, grip screw retains fire blue, early case colored hammer shows light color, overall fine deep blue with grip straps mostly gray and a touch of gray on the bottom of the forward part of the trigger guard bow, butt shows fine blue and has the original lanyard swivel, light streak of gray down the barrel sides from holster carry- minor and typical, light edge wear only to the cylinder and frame, tight action (hammer a little sticky on one or two chambers but works fine and may just need a little oil to smooth out- minor), bore is bright and may have a little leading that needs to be brushed out to be exc. or perfect, a really fine big 115 year old frontier Colt .44-40!
