RNWMP Colt New Service .455 Eley (Royal Northwest Mounted Police #1140)
Description: Listed as one of 100 revolvers shipped from colt to Thos. Birkett & Son on August 25th 1914 for the RNWMP. Expected holster wear but mechanically perfect with sharp bore and tight lock-up. The right side of the barel is marked 45 Colt and the cylinder is the proper length for the 45LC cartridge. These earlier contract revolvers were ordered in .455 but by the time the order was being filled the RNWMP had already made the decision to go to the more powerful 45LC round. The 45LC ammo was more readily available commercially and .455 dried up with the onset of WWI. Where the barrel bore and rifling dimensions were identical the cylinders were opened up to LC under contract with local armorers on all but a few of the remaining revolvers and remarked on the opposite side.
