1924 Vintage Colt 1st Issue Police Positive Revolver in .32 New Police/.32 S&W Long ** Scarce 2.5" Inch All-Original Colt ** SOLD
First introduced in 1907 and manufactured thru 1927, the 1st Issue Colt Police Positive revolver was an excellent small-frame double-action revolver and a commercial success for the Colt firm. Offered in 4 different calibers and 4 different barrel lengths from 2.5" to 6" inches, the Police Positive featured an improved "positive lock" version of the New Police model action, a square butt frame, fixed iron sights, a smooth top strap, and checkered black hard rubber grips thru 1923/24 when checkered Walnut became standard. This particular example is was made late in 1923 or very early 1924 and is 100% original. It is chambered in the .32 New Police cartridge and has the sought-after 2.5" inch barrel. This Colt Police Positive is in perfect mechanical condition and is in very good condition overall. The original factory blue finish shows some finish wear on the barrel, cylinder, and in places on some of the high edges but still retains a lot of bright, beautiful gloss blue finish on the frame and grip straps. It is highly likely that the finish wear on this example is from long-term storage in a leather holster rather than actual wear from use, as the front and rear grip straps are perfect. The bore in the 2.5" inch barrel is bright and perfect, free from any pitting, erosion, or imperfections of any kind. The rifling still looks new, with sharp lands and grooves throughout the barrel. The 6-shot fluted cylinder also has perfect chambers, just as bright and clean as the barrel. All of the factory stampings and markings on this gun are crisp, clean, and 100% legible. All of the numbered parts match, including the grips. This revolver was made at the beginning of the changeover to checkered Walnut grips, and was factory-fitted with some of the last more handsome checkered hard rubber grips. Both grip panels are in excellent condition, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or visible wear. Both grips are numbered on the backside with a scratched-in serial number matching the gun. Both grips look like someone had scratched their initials on the backside as well which have been scratched out. Both grips are perfectly fit to the grip frame and tight to the metal with no gaps or slop. The action on this Colt is smooth, slick, and perfectly "in time" whether it is worked single or double-action, fast or slow. All of the controls are in perfect working order on this Colt, and we have no doubt that it will fire just as reliably and accurately now as it did when it first left the factory 97 years ago. Of interest regarding this revolver is that Colt's .32 New Police cartridge (which this gun is chambered in) was their attempt to market a more potent .32 caliber revolver cartridge with their name on it, to avoid chambering the gun in .32 S&W Long which referenced Smith & Wesson. Despite the gun being marked ".32 Police Ctg" it will also chamber the .32 S&W Long. If you have been looking for a cool vintage Colt revolver to add to your collection this 2.5" inch 1st Issue Police Positive would be a superb choice. Not only should this revolver continue to be an excellent long-term investment, but it would also be a lot of fun to take to the range on occasion to shoot the readily available .32 S&W Long thru it.
