Colt Police Positive 1st Issue .38 S&W 6” New Police
Description: As can be seen in the photos, this revolver is Colt Police Positive with a New Police side plate. This is not at all unusual as the Police Positive was seen with New Police side plates in the first years of its production. The reason you can tell it started life as a Police Positive is the cylinder length. The New Police was only ever chambered for the .32 caliber cartridges (.32 Colt, .32 S&W Long) and not for the .38 S&W. The New Police had a longer cylinder with a length of 1.63 inches while its successor, the Police Positive, had a cylinder length of around 1.25 inches. Despite this, both frames were close enough in overall dimensions such that many parts from a New Police will fit on a Police Positive frame. As such, Colt used up the left-over New Police side plates until they ran out. This is why Police Positive revolvers can be found with New Police side plates. The Colt Police Positive was manufactured for those its name suggests - the fine officers putting their lives on the line every day all day in the early 1900s to protect the lives and property of the citizens around them. It was designed to be a light, easily carried revolver for persons who would potentially walk during their shift rather than using a car. Imagine having to carry an S&W N frame or Colt New Service all day on your hip without the benefit of having a horse, bike, or automobile. The Police Positive was built on the new Police Positive frame (the predecessor to the famous Colt “D” frame). This came with certain advantages. For roughly the same size and weight, the Colt Police Positive revolver has 6 shots of .38 versus the Smith’s 5 shot I and J frames. This was also true for the later D frame revolvers chambered for the .38 Special. Colt was always more than willing to play up this fact in its advertisements. The Positive was very popular among police departments, alongside their larger counterparts such as the Colt Official Police, New Service, Smith and Wesson Hand Ejector Model 1905 (later the Model 10) and Hand Ejectors .38/44 and .44. The revolver is in fair to good condition. The barrel and cylinder have a deep blue finish which suggests they are replacements. Like a true Colt, it locks up as tight as a bank vault. The bore is in pristine condition. The left grip has a small chip and wear marks on the bottom. This is due in part to the level of knowledge of rubber manufacture around the turn of the century. The grips turn rock-hard over time and eventually crack. My personal Police Positive has similar wear to its grips. Look-alike replacements are readily available today and these are much more durable. In my personal experience with Police Positives, I have found them to be excellent shooters, and they are comfortable to shoot even with the small size of the grips. Recoil for the 38 S&W is light. The Police Positive deserves far more attention than it receives. SOLD Manufacturer: Colt's PT. F.A. Mfg. Co.
