#4986 Colt S/A 7-1/2”x45COLT, 31XXX (1876), U.S. Cavalry issued and inspected J. T. Cleveland (JTC). Very good action, and the hammer has all the “clicks intact and a positive lock-up. The bore looks to be about a 6-7 on a scale of 10 and has no serious pitting or bulges; just the usual wear. The exterior has some scattered light to medium pitting in spots (mostly on the cylinder and a little on the front of the frame); the markings are good to very good with a correct good block address. It also has the correct early style ejector housing with the non-removable rod (without first removing the head). The grips are Very Good+ with just small flea bites to the toe edges and they actually have readable cartouches remaining! They look to be the correct original grips to this revolver, as they fit excellent and the right side is JTC inspected. O.K. now the caveats. With so many of these Colt Single Actions having had some degree of restorations and cosmetic enhancements ….especially the Cavalry models, I am reluctant to say this gun is a pure-as-the-driven-snow piece. In most cases it seems that SOMETHING of consequence has been done to these highly sought after Cavalry models and while I am certainly no expert, this gun does look right to me ….but that is ONLY my opinion. It should therefore be considered as possibly being a restored gun (to some degree) and is being priced as such even though I cannot pick a solid reason for saying this. It is a decent, very early martial revolver and inspected by a relatively scarce inspector. For the collector who can accept a possibly restored gun, it is a good and rare opportunity to acquire a very desirable Cavalry Single Action at a fraction of what these usually are priced.
