1873 Colt Single Action Army .44-40 Engraved Nickel Gold Carved Eagle Ivory Grips 1880 - Attributed to Western Movie Star BUCK JONES
Description: Model 1873 Colt Single Action Army Revolver, Engraved, Nickel & Gold Plated with Carved American Eagle Ivory Grips Attributed to Western Movie Star Buck Jones, .44-40 WCF, mfg. 1880. This neat old Colt recently surfaced from an estate here in Connecticut and was long rumored to have been used by legendary Western movie star Buck Jones. Buck was one of the victims of the infamous Coconut Grove fire in Boston and according to a letter written in 1972 to Buck's wife from the Boston police commissioner the department had a .44 caliber Colt Peacemaker revolver, belt, and holster of Buck's which had been on display in their ballistics collection since 1942 that they wanted to return to the family. Apparently the gun Buck's widow received was not the Colt mentioned in the letter however and it's whereabouts were never known. She gave the belt and holster to a friend who's daughter donated them to the Museum of The Mountain West in Montrose, Colorado where they reside today. I don't know if this is the missing .44 caliber Peacemaker mentioned in the letter but it certainly would explain how one of Buck's Colts ended up in a nearby Connecticut estate. An old typed display card is currently the only provenance we have to accompany the gun. Buck Jones joined the Miller Bros. 101 Ranch in 1913 and went on to become one of the greatest Western movie stars of the 1920's and 30's. By the time of his death in 1942 Buck had appeared in nearly 200 films and even starred alongside a young John Wayne in the 1931 movie "The Range Feud". The gun certainly shows the wear and use one would expect to see on a Colt that spent decades on the frontier before being used decades more on screen and in Wild West shows. Originally made with a 7 1/2" barrel the gun was neatly shortened to 4 3/4" early on as evidenced by excessive holster wear around the muzzle. It appears to have been period engraved in the New York style with some of the engraving later re-cut when the gun was refinished in nickel. Later still the gun was entirely gold washed although most of that finish has worn away with only traces remaining in protected areas. Overall it retains 95% old reapplied nickel finish which is turning frosty in areas with minor flaking on the gripstraps. The re-blued hammer and trigger are correct for the vintage of the gun and may be original. The ivory grips feature a relief carved Eagle on the right side clutching an American flag and fit the gun well. They show moderate wear with a mottled creamy/brown patina and have no cracks or chips. Matching serial number "58167" stamped on the frame, triggerguard, and backstrap (backstrap number is extremely faint but legible - may have had an inscription on butt removed?). Clear three-line patent dates, "44CF" marking, and one-line barrel address. Most screws appear original with many retaining gold finish. Period refitted blade front sight with old replacement ejector rod head and original brass spring. The loading gate is loose and fits a bit sloppy but is original as evidenced by matching asembly number "353" marked on the frame under the triggerguard. A thin strip of metal has been dovetailed across the face of the recoil shield around the firing pin hole which the display card states was due to "excessive use of blanks". I wouldn't call the bore "shot out" as the card says but there is heavy blackpowder frosting and superfine pinprick pitting scattered throughout with much lead and blackpowder residue caked around the breech. Otherwise it shows a fair amount of rifling for the most part worn at the muzzle. The action cocks with five clicks and hangs up just slightly at half cock but functions properly overall. I think a slight adjustment of the cylinder bolt would make the action much smoother. The gap between the cylinder and barrel is very wide but you have to remember that as a movie gun it would have been firing blanks for the last 30 years of it's active life so actual shooting safety was not important. This is a gun I definitely wish could talk because it obviously saw a very long and storied life. A great early cowboy Colt with wonderful eye appeal and a colorful story! *NOTE* Due to ivory restrictions this pistol will not be sold or shipped to residents of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington.
