1873 Colt Single Action Army .45 Revolver 4 3/4" ID'd Texas History Inscribed 1893 Blackpowder 1st Gen Wild West SAA Pistol
Description: Inscribed Model 1873 Colt Single Action Army Revolver Identified to Gabriel Ramirez Chapa, San Diego, Texas, with Factory Letter, .45 Cal, mfg. 1893 with 4 ¾" barrel. This is nice, good honest cowboy gun that was probably originally sold in Nebraska but ultimately made it's way down to Texas by the early/mid 1900's. Gabriel Ramirez Chapa was born in 1914 in San Diego, Texas, where he would reside his entire life until his death in 1970. His father Geronimo Chapa was born in Texas in 1884 and his grandfather Jose Chapa was born in Mexico in 1853. Perhaps the gun was handed down by one of these men or another older relative. Chapa was a WWII veteran, county commissioner, and three-time city commissioner. He was also the town Fire Chief and proprietor of a local cafe. Overall the pistol retains 85% very old reapplied nickel finish with “G.R.CHAPA” inscribed on the right side of the frame. Original hard rubber grips fit PERFECT with no chips or cracks and show heavy wear with a smooth sun faded appearance. I usually don't brag about hard rubber grips but these have such a great feel in hand. The last four digits of the serial number “3112” are factory scratched on the back of the grips and additionally scratched over again with “MEX” written on both sides. Desirable blackpowder frame with original long-knurl hammer, trigger, loading gate, ejector rod, blade front sight, and screws. Ejector spring and cylinder pin are replacements. Clear rampant horse logo, patent dates, and matching serial number “153112” stamped on frame, triggerguard, and backstrap. The two-line barrel address is mostly buffed away with small remnants visible. Action is very smooth and crisp and functions perfectly with five clicks. Cylinder locks up tight on time with only very slight play. Bore shows very strong sharp rifling front to back with light/moderate blackpowder frosting and fine pinprick pitting throughout. Included factory letter confirms the gun's original configuration as .45 caliber, 4 ¾" barrel, blue finish, stocks not listed (rubber), sold to A. Hickman & Company, shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company, Chicago, Illinois as part of a 5 gun shipment on August 30th 1893. I spent considerable time researching this and the only “A. Hickman & Company” I can find that existed during the 1890's was A. W. Hickman & Co. out of Nebraska which was a large construction and lumber yard. Hickman & Company would have ordered the gun through Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company's hardware catalog which was popular accross the country from the 1860's-1960's. A super cool old cowboy Colt with a colorful Western history! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
