1873 Colt Single Action Army .45 Revolver Mexico City Shipped Texas History 1881 Ivory Nickel Blackpowder Wild West SAA Cowboy Pistol
SALE PENDING
Description:
Documented Desirable Mexico City Shipped Model 1873 Colt Single Action Army Revolver, Nickel Plated with Checkered Fleur-de-Lis Ivory Grips & Texas History, .45 Cal, mfg. 1881 with 7 ½" barrel. This authentic Wild West Colt was originally shipped to Wexell & DeGress in Mexico City and purportedly owned by a Texas Marshall. Morphy's sold this revolver in May 2020 at which time it was fitted with a pair of carved phoenix ivory grips and accompanied by a Texas Deputy Marshall badge, military gunbelt rig and family album which have since been lost by the succeeding owner. To quote Morphy's description; “This revolver, along with the included collection of artifacts, is believed to have been the former property of Dick Maxwell, Dick was the son of ”Horse" Maxwell. Maxwell is reported to have been the Marshall of a small South Texas town named Bluffton located south of Llano Texas. The collection was purchased from a descendant family estate". The gun now wears a set of checkered Fleur-de-Lis ivory grips and comes (only) with a 2025 Colt factory letter as well as a copy of an older letter from 2004. The letters confirm the gun's original configuration as .45 caliber, barrel length not listed (standard 7 ½"), blue finish, stocks not listed (standard walnut), shipped to Wexell & DeGress, Mexico City, Mexico, & New York, November 15th, 1881. Upon discovering in recent years that Wexell & DeGress had an office in New York City Colt Archives now lists both locations for guns shipped to this dealer however it is accepted that their New York location was just an office which existed primarily to obtain and ship arms to their retail store in Mexico City. Wexell & DeGress was famous for embellishing the guns they sold and I am confident that they applied the nickel finish when new. Overall the pistol retains approximately 45% period retailer applied nickel finish with the balance worn and flaked to gray/plum. Gripstraps have been polished with fine buffing marks. Heavy holster wear on both sides of the muzzle with some scattered pinprick pitting on the cylinder and along the top of the ejector housing. The ivory grips are slightly undersized along the front and back and nearly flush on the butt yet fit well enough overall and give a really cool look. They show moderate hand wear along the edges and have a pleasing mellowed color with some natural grain checks on the butt and very fine scattered polishing swirls. Clear Colt barrel address, three-line patent dates, “45 CAL” marked triggerguard, and matching original serial number “63539” stamped on the frame, barrel, backstrap, triggerguard, and cylinder. Original blade front sight, loading gate, and ejector assembly with brass spring. The hammer, trigger, and cylinder pin have all been polished bright and are correct and/or original. Several screws are correct replacements. The first safety click doesn't hold as it should but otherwise the action functions very smooth and crisp with five clicks. Cylinder locks up very tight. The bore shows good strong rifling overall with wear and pitting just at the very muzzle and moderate blackpowder frosting throughout. Western shipped Colts such as this are highly prized for their frontier history. Provenance: Dick Maxwell family estate, property of a gentleman, The Charles Marx collection. *NOTE* Due to ivory restrictions this pistol will not be sold or shipped to residents of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington.
