Ben Lane Engraved SET Colt SAA 44-40 + Winchester 1892 44-40
Description: Up for sale is an incredible set of one Colt SAA in 44-40 made in 1897, and one Winchester 1892 in 44-40 made in 1893. Engraved by the legendary artist Ben Lane. Letter transcribed below: I thank you for enquiring about the history of the two guns I engraved years ago and were sold to you recently by Curious George Collectibles of Aspen Colorado. The Winchester 1892 Deluxe Rifle, Cal 44 W.C.F, with a 24” half octagon barrel, serial #31917 was made by Winchester as a standard rifle in 1893, I rebuilt this rifle, restocked, engraved and inlayed it for my personal collection in 1973. I made it into a pistol grip deluxe rifle and restocked it with 3x Pennsylvania walnut and checkered the pistol grip and fore end in Style H Winchester pattern. The rifle is engraved in a fine Germanic relief scroll pattern. The Scenes (running white tail deer) and a (Big horn sheep faun) were engraved in flat relief. The border inlay is 24ct gold and was placed on the barrel and lever. The plating on the receiver and fore end cap is also 24ct gold and is several ____ thick. My signature is placed under the finger lever on the bottom tang. I had this rifle in my engraving display at gun shows for over 15 years. The Colt S.A. , 44-40 calibre, with a 7 ½” barrel #170205 was manufactured by Colt in 1897. I restored and engraved this gun in a presentation pattern similar to the Colt factory engraving of the period. The bordering gold inlay is 24ct as is the gold plating on the frame. I made the simulated one-piece presentation walnut grips at this time. The bluing is a caustic blue. The screws are fire blued. I completed this work for a client in 1988.
