"If only this gun could talk..." has become a familiar cliche, but in this case, I think there would be an interesting story. This 1st generation Colt Single Action Army revolver, with early smokeless powder frame, shows signs of significant holster wear, while exhibiting tight, fully functioning mechanicals, indicating that it probably has not been shot much. The Colt's original bluing, and much of the factory engraved patent dates and information, is highly worn down, though showing only minor freckling (the rampant Colt logo is completely worn off, if it was ever present). The ejector tube assembly has much more blue finish remaining, suggesting that this may be a replaced part. The GP hard rubber grips also show significant wear, the Colt pony logos and checkering are all but rubbed smooth, and there is a noticeable "ding" on the exterior surface of the right grip panel. There are no markings or etchings on the interior surfaces of the grip panels. At some point in it's history, it appears that the front sight was filed down some by the gun's owner. While the cylinder shows a noticeable spin ring, it locks up tight upon cocking and the single action functions 100%, giving all expected "four clicks". The barrel is 5.5" long and has a great bore still exhibiting strong lands and grooves with minimal evidence of pitting. According to the accompanying Colt Archival letter, this gun was one of a shipment of 55 guns to the Simmons Hardware Company of St. Louis, Missouri on December 09, 1902. It appears that the local Wells Fargo office then bought the gun from Simmons Hardware, as evidenced by the "W.F. & Co. EX." stamped on the buttstrap of the revolver. All in all, a great, fully functioning piece of Americana that would make an excellent addition to any Colt or Wells Fargo Express collection. If only this gun could talk...
