Colt SAA Artillery .45 Colt. A late blackpowder SAA with RAC inspector marks stamped on the main frame, barrel, cylinder and wood grip. The cylinder also is stamped with an "o", and the bottom of the lower frame/trigger guard has a "k" stamped under the serial number. The 5 1/2" barrel has the correct single line address. Also, under the ejector housing the barrel is stamped 7143, RAC, a P and a sideways P. The left side of the main frame is stamped correctly with three dates in two lines and is US stamped. As usual, this Artillery model has different parts and serial numbers. The main frame serial number is 138797 (dates to 1891) and inspector stamped RAC, the lower frame/trigger guard serial number is 119979 (dates to 1887), backstrap serial number 132652 (dates to 1890) and (as mentioned above) includes a stamped "k" under the serial number (the "k" stamp indicates an arsenal replacement part). An Artillery model will be stamped with "US" and government inspector initials, as in RAC for inspector Rinaldo A. Carr. The revolver comes with a Colt letter which includes the following information: Colt Single Action Army Revolver; Serial Number: 138797; Caliber: .45/c; Barrel Length: Not Listed; Finish: Blue; Type of Stocks: Not Listed; Sold To: United States Government; Delivered To: U.S. Government Inspector; Address: located at the Colt plant; Date of Shipment: March 18, 1891; Number of Same Type Guns in Shipment: 200. It also states: As noted above, the records do not provide information with regard to the barrel length of subject revolver or the type of stocks. However, this is usually an indication of a 7 1/2" barrel and walnut stocks as these were considered standard issue for that time period. As for the 7 1/2" barrel and the mixed serial numbers, the Blue Book Of Gun Values gives information that from 1895 to 1903 the U.S. government’s single action army revolvers were reworked and refinished if necessary and 7 1/2" barrels were shortened to 5 1/2". Also, from 1900 to 1903 single action army revolvers that went to the 1898 Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection, were to be refurbished, however there was no attempt to match serial numbers when putting the guns back together. Please refer to the Blue Book Of Gun Values section on "Late U.S. Model SAA, Serial Range 131,187 - 140,361 (Mfg. 1890-1891)", and section on "Artillery Model SAAs", on pages 524 & 525 in the 2016 Edition (37th Edition).
