Condemned Colt Single Action Army with Engraving
Description: Condemned Colt Single Action Army with Engraving SAA 45 cal. Serial #16453. 7 1/2" barrel. Was part of the US Army contract of 1875 per Kopek "Study of the SSA" but was condemned during its inspection and consequently sold to the civilian market. It was shipped to HND Folsom Arms Co. (letter included), New York on June 29, 1876. It was dual inspected by A. P. Casey and Samuel B. Lewis, both sub-inspectors in 1875. The appropriate "C's" and "L's" are still showing. The "C" for condemned is on the forward left trigger guard. The one piece ivory grips are bonded together by a wooden block. The ivory is beautiful with no cracks and is yellowed as would be expected for the age with slight shrinkage. The grips fit well and look great. The frame has a one line only patent date "July 2, 1872". The top date appears to never have been there. The "Peacemaker Enclyclopedia" by Cochran states that a broken die causes factory error and also shows up on serial #s 14614, 15447, and 16428. This Colt is completely period engraved. It was fitted with one piece, ivory grips, not noted in the letter. All the parts appear to be original with the exception of the cylinder pin screw which is an old period replacement. The cam was replaced on the hammer by the "Peacemaker Specialists" and now functions perfectly. The gun is a worn grey metal color and shows use and carry with just traces of blue showing in protected areas. The barrel is the original 7 1/2" with rounding at the muzzle from holster use. The bore is good to very good. The early slanted barrel address is fully visible and all other markings are clear and all numbers match. The engraving is of the period and very nicely done. It is worn from use but shows nicely. This Colt was found in Oregon. Comes with original stamped and spotted money belt holster. Holster 38"L SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Colt Model: Colt Single Action Army Serial Number: 16453 Caliber Info: .45 |
