HISTORIC DOCUMENTED 2ND CAVALRY COLT U.S. MODEL 1873 AINSWORTH INSPECTED SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER IN SUPERB CONDITION. .45 Long Colt caliber 7 ½” barrel with italic address. Completely martially inspected including the early small size “U.S.” stamp on the frame as well as the “Two July” patent dates. Has all the small “A” series of inspection stamps on the appropriate parts. Proper small “P” proof on underside of barrel. Grips stamped with U.S. Ordnance Inspector Orville W. Ainsworth’s “OWA” script cartouche on the left grip flat. Serial numbered “4334” on frame, trigger guard and backstrap with barrel and cylinder serial numbered “4330” four serial numbers apart. Both of these serial numbers fall in the range of 83 revolvers shipped issued to Company “F” of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry in 1874. This unit was then at Fort Ellis, Montana Territory. Additionally National Archives records indicate serial number “4330” was reported by Company F, 2nd Cavalry on Oct. 12, 1878 as unserviceable because of a lost center(cylinder) pin and screw. It should be noted that the 2nd Cavalry was heavily engaged in the Indian Campaigns of the Northern plains from the early 1870’s thru the 1880’s including the Battle of the Rosebud and the Black Hills Campaign. A superb 100% original example in excellent plus condition with 90% plus original blue and 50-60% original case colors. Retains most of the original blue on the screws and has exceptional near mint grips with a crisp cartouche. Mint bore and chambers and perfect working order. With John Kopec letter in which he states that the two serial numbers were a factory error during assembly. There are only three serial numbers documented to the 2nd Cavalry listed in the National Archives records in this early range and this is the only one of the three known still in existence. is one of only a small handful of Ainsworth’s with this high level of blue, case hardening and grip condition.
