Important Cased Colt SAA with Early London Address in .450 Boxer, Colt Archives Letter, Made 1878, No FFL Needed
Description: Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are Brit proud to offer this seldom seen and important version of Colt's Single Action Army. Sam Colt was very active in the English market, and established a production facility there early in his career, later closed in 1856. The model 1873 was still fresh when Colt began shipping them to London. In June of 1876, Colt got in trouble with the British, as guns arrived from the USA with a London barrel address. England prohibited imported goods from purporting to be made in England, and stopped Colt shipments at the docks. Late in 1876, both parties agreed that adding "DEPOT" to the address would meet the spirit of the law. The first such barrel address was 3 1/4 inches long, and had 2 lines under the o in Co, and had a square period at the end. On this gun, I had assumed the weak lettering near the muzzle was due to repeated cleaning or holster wear. Actually, all such guns had weak stampings near the muzzle, and a shorter 2 1/2 inch roll stamp was created to solve the problem. Only 519 SAA's were made with this rare barrel address, and 350 were chambered in .45 Eley. The first revolvers shipped to England were fitted with the standard 7 1/2 barrels, and chambered in the .45 caliber Webley variations. A few "short barreled" 5 1/2 inch guns were sent, and were met with instant success. From 1874 to 1883, these short barreled guns accounted for 64% of the Colt sales in London. This offering is one of those guns, shipped in the year of our Lord 1878. The Colt Archives letter refers to the "short barrel", as the 7 1/2 inch was standard, and the 4 3/4 inch barrel had not yet been made. Along with the special barrel address and British caliber, this revolver boasts the early features of a bullseye ejector handle, caliber marked on the left rear trigger guard, and serial numbers on the barrel and cylinder. She is in very good condition for being 145 years old. The blue has drifted to a pleasing patina, the frame still has generous amounts of smoky case color, with a few flashes of blue, no less. The one piece grip is very good, and fits like a glove. The action still produces 4 clicks, and locks up fairly tight. Even the bore of the 5 1/2 inch barrel is good, with plenty of shine and strong rifling. There are a few scattered patches of light roughness, but remember, these early guns were fed a steady diet of black powder. This wheel gun comes housed in a very nice English case, complete with a cartridge block, oil bottle, screwdriver, and key. Only 2679 SAA's were chambered in .450 Eley, and very few made their way back to this country. If you are an advanced Colt collector, and do not have one of the early London address guns, then look no further. Investors, take note. A similar gun sold for over 11 thousand dollars on 12-10-23. It was refinished, and looked like a shiny new penny, which collectors say they hate. It also had the standard Hartford address. See the last photo.
